Beaverbrook Hotel, Coach House Spa with Kati Kaia

When did life become so manic and speedy... oh perhaps when we  all got phones that are computers in our hands so we can never feel totally 'offline' and then with socials and learning, AI apps - all at your fingertips it got even worse! As someone with a complete ADHD mind, had I not the discipline (and the love) to get off line, I too would probably live there, in a hyper-active state, downloading my ten billionth self learning course or audio book, all whilst also watching how to make a new cottage cheese 'healthy' dessert and learning Chinese or maybe French!

We've all been there. You pick up your phone for just a quick second, 'oh I'll have a quick check of my messages', and suddenly an hour has vanished into the endless scroll. Your thumb moves almost on autopilot, flicking through endless feeds, notifications, and content that leaves you feeling more drained than energised... yes you love a dog or in my case, bunny reel, so cute, or the latest way to make a wrap, without using an actual wrap... If you're reading this, you've probably felt that familiar guilt creeping in – the realisation that you've spent more of your precious time on something that doesn't really fulfil you. But here's the good news: there are so many better ways to spend your time! Woo hoo! and we at Kati Kaia are here to help you discover them... fondly remembering the days of your, where in my childhood, we had no entertainment apart from 4 channels... can you even imagine that now! Can you imagine just how bored we all were!!? And that is why... we played tennis in the street till the sun went down, we made essential oils and perfumes from rose petals from our gardens, that is why after doing the same facial out of a 'Elle Magazine' book, read from cover to cover for the past year at age 14, I picked up my mum's Iyengar Yoga book and started to do that in my bedroom into the night instead!

The scrolling trap is real, and it's designed to keep you hooked. Social media platforms employ teams of engineers whose sole job is to make their apps as addictive as possible (so sad). But you don't have to fall victim to this endless cycle. Instead, you can redirect that energy toward activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. Whether you're looking to get more active, tap into your creative side, or simply find some peace and quiet, we've got ten amazing alternatives to scrolling that will transform your daily routine.

Physical Activities: Move Your Body, Elevate Your Mood

1. Roll Out Your Yoga Mat

Let's start with one of our absolute favourites – yoga! Instead of scrolling through your phone, why not unroll one of our beautiful artist yoga mats and dedicate some time to your practice? Yoga is so much more than just physical exercise; it's a holistic practice that connects your body, breath, and mind. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or just starting out, spending even fifteen minutes on your mat can completely shift your energy for the day. It makes me feel sane every morning I step onto my mat ad each evening for a shorter practice, which could be as simple as a sun salutation A & B and really exploring how warrior I feels in my body that day... maybe it feel like my roots are deep into the earth and my arms reaching to the sky, or it feels like I ate too much for my tea and I need to lie back down on the mat!

The beauty of yoga is that it meets you exactly where you are. On days when you're feeling energized, you can flow through more dynamic sequences. On days when you need grounding, you can slow things down with gentle stretches and restorative poses. And here's the thing – when you're on your mat, you're fully present. There's no room for scrolling, no distractions, just you and your breath. Our artist yoga mats aren't just functional; they're designed to inspire you to roll out every single day with pure joy, feel the soft touch of the top and breath deeply. The vibrant designs and beautiful artwork make your practice space feel like a sanctuary.

2. Get Into a Workout Routine

If yoga isn't your thing, that's totally fine! There are countless other ways to move your body. Maybe you're into running, cycling, pilates or strength training. The point is to find something that gets your heart pumping and makes you feel alive. A solid workout routine is one of the best antidotes to the scrolling habit because it demands your full attention and presence.

When you're in the middle of a workout, you can't be checking your phone. You're focused on your form, your breathing, your strength, and your endurance. Plus, the endorphins you release during exercise are way better than any dopamine hit you'd get from a like or a comment. Start small if you need to – even a twenty-minute walk counts. The key is consistency and finding something you actually enjoy doing.

3. Stretch and Move Throughout Your Day

You don't need a full workout session to benefit from movement. Incorporating stretching and gentle movement throughout your day can make a huge difference in how you feel. Take a five-minute break every hour to stand up, stretch your arms overhead, touch your toes, and roll your shoulders. These micro-movements add up and help counteract the stiffness that comes from sitting and scrolling.

One of my favourites is hands behind the neck and just gently bending the neck (be kind) just to make sure it doesn't get stiff or sore! I have a standing desk as well, though as I a typing now I am bouncing on my very large pilates ball / new chair and I must say... it is fun!

4. Pick Up a Paintbrush

Not everything you do has to be a Monet or Van Gogh (did you know Van Gogh didn't sell a single painting when he was alive! I bet he would be all over TikTok nowadays!) There's something incredibly therapeutic about painting. You don't need to be skilled or talented – this isn't about creating a masterpiece for a gallery. It's about the process, the flow, and the joy of creating something with your own hands. Grab some paints, a canvas, and let your imagination run wild. Painting is a form of meditation that engages your creative mind and pulls you completely away from the digital world.

When you're painting, you're in a state of flow. Time disappears, worries fade into the background, and all that matters is the colours on your brush and the canvas in front of you. This is the opposite of scrolling, which keeps you in a scattered, reactive state. Even if you just paint for thirty minutes, you'll feel the difference in your mental clarity and mood.

When I first started painting, I was working in fashion design and wanted to just play around with colours on a canvas to create a print idea I had, I am not a print designer btw, they are very skilled with repeats and set up knowledge etc, I am a silhouette or drape designer so very different skills, but I went to the store, grab some paints and loved it so much that became my weekends!

Making Flower Crowns at my friend's blessingway and then drawing the flowers in the crown so we have them forever in watercolour.

Again clearly, doesn't need to be good! It can be just for you and your friend!

One of my earliest jobs that I loved, straight out of fashion school was drawing fashion illustrations for design houses, fashion week invites, trend companies, books and fashion journals... yes, we use to draw these things by hand and colour with watercolour!

5. Dive Into Drawing and Sketching

If painting feels too intimidating, drawing is a perfect alternative. All you need is a pencil and some paper. Sketch what you see around you, draw from imagination, or follow along with online tutorials if you want some guidance. Drawing is accessible, affordable, and incredibly rewarding. The act of putting pencil to paper and creating something from nothing is deeply satisfying. I love sketching just for fun or going to my local life drawing classes to grow the skill of eye to hand and also meet others who are like-minded!

6. Start an Art Project

Maybe you want to tackle something bigger – a mixed media project, a collage, a sculpture, or any other art form that calls to you. Give yourself permission to be messy, experimental, and imperfect. Art projects are wonderful because they give you something to work toward, and they keep your hands and mind engaged in a way that scrolling simply cannot. When I started my art practice, it was messy and well, interesting... I didn't know what the outcome was I just needed to paint, paint and paint! I started on my rooftop, then into the bedroom and eventually graduated to a garden shed! Before getting my first studio space with other artists, and now... well i work pretty big!

Start small and work your way up!

Mindfulness Practices: Find Your Inner Peace

7. Meditate with Intention

Now this is really where some magic will happen for you! Meditation is one of the most powerful antidotes to constant scrolling. When you meditate, you're training your mind to focus and be present. You're also giving yourself permission to slow down and simply be, without doing anything or consuming anything. At first it can feel soooo hard especially if you have a phone that is all bright and sparkly and calling to you... But, by making your meditation practice a little more interactive, like using mala beads, creating your own ritual set that keeps your hands and mind - away from phone time - and brings you into a mini flow state. Our meditation kits at Kati Kaia are designed to support your practice and make it easier to establish a consistent routine.

Start with just five or ten minutes. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath. You could lie down and place your hands on your belly, just notice the rise and fall of the belly with the breath... do you know what... your meditating! When your mind wanders – and it will – gently bring your attention back to your breath. There's no judgment, no right or wrong way to do it. Over time, you'll notice that meditation becomes easier and more natural, and the benefits extend far beyond your meditation cushion.

8. Practice Breathing Exercises

Sometimes you don't need a full meditation session – you just need to pause and breathe. Breathing exercises are quick, powerful tools that can calm your nervous system and bring you back to the present moment. Try the 4-7-8 technique: breathe in for four counts, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. Or try box breathing: in for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. These simple practices take just a few minutes but can have profound effects on your stress levels and mental clarity.

Wellness Activities: Nourish Your Soul

9. Get Lost in a Good Book

Reading is a wonderful escape from the digital world. Whether you love fiction, self-help, memoirs, or poetry, there's a book out there waiting for you. Reading engages your imagination, expands your knowledge, and gives your eyes a break from screens. Set aside dedicated reading time – maybe in the morning with your coffee or in the evening before bed – and really immerse yourself in a story or ideas that inspire you.

10. Start a Journaling Practice

Journaling is incredibly therapeutic. You can write about your day, your feelings, your dreams, your goals, or anything else that's on your mind. There's no right or wrong way to journal – it's just for you. The act of putting pen to paper and expressing yourself is deeply healing. Plus, journaling helps you process emotions, gain clarity, and track your personal growth over time.

BONUS: DANCE!

Nothing beats a great tune and a good dance! You could free style, swirl around or even try out meditation dance flows where you learn to tune inwards and really start to listen and move freely how the body wants to express itself, good pair of headphones and your all set not to annoy your neighbours!

Conclusion: Choose Joy Over the Scroll

The truth is, scrolling is easy. It requires no effort, no creativity, and no presence. But easy isn't always what we need. What we really need is to feel alive, creative, strong, and at peace. We need activities that nourish us rather than drain us. We need to reclaim our time and our attention.

At Kati Kaia, we believe that true wellness comes from engaging with life fully and intentionally. Whether you're rolling out your yoga mat, picking up a paintbrush, or sitting quietly in meditation, you're choosing yourself. You're choosing joy, growth, and presence over the endless scroll.

So the next time you reach for your phone, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: what do I really need right now? Then choose one of these ten alternatives and dive in. I have been meaning to finish a great book i've been reading since my holiday, have I had it next to my bed for a while unfinished whilst I scroll YouTube, yes, am I going to read it this evening? You  know what... YES!

Your mind, body, and soul will thank you. Let Kati Kaia be your companion on this journey toward a more mindful, creative, and joyful life. Roll out every day with pure joy – not on your phone, but in the real world, doing things that truly matter.

Tell me, what are your favourite no scroll evenings? or hobbies? Let's all share the inspiration!
