When you begin your yoga journey you may be more concerned with getting the asanas ‘just right’ which is an important step, than the chakras or thinking about how colour effects your mood. To let go of the analytical side of yoga and move into the deeper, feeling of movement and strength, that is where the true transformations begin and colour can be a key part of opening your vision, giving you strength and an extra boost when you need it.

It is well known that colour affects our moods, emotions and state of mind. But did you know colour helps us understand who we truly are, the talents and abilities we have deep inside of us, and the power we came with. This is one of the main reasons colour and yoga create a brilliant mix. As yoga works the body and challenges the mind, colour stimulates the person’s energy and turns the wheels!

Colour is the key to subconscious
— CARL GUSTAV JUNG

Our colour choices tell us a lot about our deepest thoughts, feelings and personalities. We can understand different things about ourselves through our colour choices. Our subconscious mind guides us through colour and you can work with colour to heal and flow. Colour opens up our inner world, which in turn leads the way assists us into living a life full of love, happiness and grace. Enveloping your senses in colour really can change your mood, your energy levels and help in healing.

What even is colour? Colour is formed by light of different wavelengths. When an object is of a certain colour, it is because it primarily reflects light of a particular wavelength corresponding to that colour. To put it simply, colour is a form of light, which is a form of energy. This energy forms the basis of Colour Therapy.

The mainstream chakra system is based on a Hindu chakra system that recognizes seven distinct “wheels” or “centers” of energy that are perpetually in motion along the human body’s spinal column. Each possessing its own color and vibrational frequency, these wheels are the catalysts of consciousness and human function. They govern various emotional issues, from our survival instincts and self-esteem to our ability to communicate and experience love. When the energy circles of the body are imbalanced, it can lead to emotional disorders and physical ailments, so many practitioners work with colour and the chakras to bring balance back to the body when it’s off center.

chakras

You can work with colour therapy to help clear your own energy field and negative emotions. The energy relating to each of these spectrum colours resonates with the energy of each of the seven main chakras of the body. You can re balance these chakras or 'wheels' by using the appropriate colour. These are general concepts and much like anything else, it can get rather complicated when you start to delve deeper, with each level of aura also being associated with a chakra and the energy body! The drawings below are lovely representations of the chakra system, these energy fields are great to begin by feeling the energy move in guided meditations and yoga practice.

A wonderful book, ‘Sacred journey of the peaceful warrior by Dan Millman, explains very simply, “The tower of life is within you. And each floor has distinct qualities, and each, from the lowest to the highest, represents a more expanded state of awareness.”

“The lower three floors, survival, creativity and power are not interested in the upper floors, clearing the lowest three floors and dealing with the issues there strengthens your journey above and the basic self. On the fourth floor, the realm of the heart, that is where you first make contact with your higher self. Unless the roots of the tree are deep it can’t blossom; unless the tower has a strong foundation, it will crumble. You’ve got to clean up the basement before you move into the top floor. Once you move up out of the personal concerns of the lower three floors, into the heart. Once you get to the fourth floor of love and self acceptance… the rest is an elevator ride.”

This mat draws inspiration to the root chakra, to connect all of your energy lines with the Earth, which is called grounding. Combined with sparks of the crown chakra, it opens up your mind to the seat of your soul. The root chakra lays the foundation for expansion in your life, a beautifully grounding and supportive colour to build strength from, where we ground ourselves into the earth and anchor our energy to manifest. This is your primal, animal nature, it allows us to harness courage, resourcefulness and the will to live during trying times. It connects us with spiritual energies of our ancestors and with the sparks of crown chakra to unlock some of those ancestral blockages. Energetically, the seventh, crown chakra has a connection with the first root chakra, as they both are at the extremities of the chakra system. The crown chakra connects us to universe and the Divine source of creation.

THERE IS SERENITY, JOY, AND DEEP PEACE ABOUT LIFE.

When we realize that everything is interconnected and that we are part of the larger scheme of life, we begin to live with gratitude, faith and trust, rather than filled with fear and anxiety. It can take some time to work on re-balancing the chakra system. You know that your body is an energetic system through which the universal life force flows. Your seven chakras are a part of this energetic system - they are a part of your energetic self. They connect you with the larger part of yourself, the universe, and at the same time they hold the secrets to your unique self, your unique soul. You can talk to your yoga teacher about exploring the chakras and develop a focused mediation time with affirmations.

The last few years we have been really working on our sacral chakra, with our beautiful Helios artwork to support this journey to self acceptance and love. Bringing warmth to my practice and glow to the soul.
